Ode To A Stranger

This poem was inspired by a scene I witness all too often. Refugees on our streets, people just walking past them, not even noticing they are there. What would you do if you were in their shoes? Worth a thought…

Ode To A Stranger

You come here for hope, for a better life, for a better future.
You come here for stability, for safety and for sanctuary.
You come here for your children, for your parents, for yourself.
You come here to escape death, destruction and degradation.

Yet when you arrive, displaced from your homeland,
You are sent to the streets to beg for your keep.
They laugh and they shout and eye you with pity, but still they walk by you, ignoring your pleas.

So now you must tell me which life is the better, as you gaze in to your empty cup.
Is begging for your life in the middle of winter any better than begging for your life with a gun to your head?
You came here for solace, for safety and comfort,
But instead you wish you were dead.
